BIJC launches an educational program to promote diversity

(PRESS RELEASE) The Black in Jewelry Coalition (BIJC), the premier international nonprofit organization for the advancement of black professionals in the gemstone, jewelry and watch industry, organizes The Jewelry Industry IDEA educational program, promoting inclusiveness, diversity and equity for everything. Sponsored by leading organizations in the jewelry industry, this two-part online educational program will help everyone in the jewelry industry recognize and confront the ingrained cultural biases that create deep community damage and break cohesion. “Leading organizations in the jewelry industry have joined forces with a common goal: to provide a free educational program on inclusivity and diversity designed to be accessible to anyone working in the jewelry industry, from precious stones and watchmaking,” said BIJC President Annie Doresca.

The two-part program will feature information-rich webinars that can be viewed live or on-demand. All participants who complete both sessions will receive a certificate of completion. Both sessions are free and will offer reruns through July.

Get rid of the BS
January 19, 2022, 2:00 p.m. EST (US and Canada)
Renowned diversity and inclusion expert Risha Grant will host “Get Rid of the BS”. Risha has a boundless style and will tackle difficult but necessary questions about how to deal with social unrest and racial injustice. She will also offer practical advice on how to confront and overcome biases to create more respectful, diverse and inclusive communities. Registration is now available.

Encounters with prejudice and racism: a round table
February 16, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. EST (US and Canada)
Hear first-person accounts of bias and racism in retail from consumers and employees. This session will use real-world scenarios to show how each encounter could have been avoided. The panel will be led by Reggie Johnson, Chief Diversity Officer/Senior Vice President at Signet Jewelers and Director of the Black in Jewelry Coalition. The Jewelry Industry IDEA training program is offered by Black in Jewelry Coalition and is presented in partnership with American Gem Society (AGS), Buyers Intelligence Group (BIG), Ethical Metalsmiths, Jewelers Board of Trade (JBT), Jewelers of America (JA ), Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC), Manufacturing Jewelers & Suppliers of America (MJSA), Responsible Jewelery Council (RJC) and Women’s Jewelry Association (WJA).
