County Education Program Wins State Award | News

At the 2022 OSU Extension Biennial Conference Awards Program, the 2022 OSU Extension Outstanding Team comes from the Northeast District and Rogers County OSU Extension. Together they created the Frieza Beef Production: Pasture to Plate educational program.

Rogers County Ag/4-H Educator Donna Patterson recognized a need early in the pandemic for reduced beef availability, rising prices and increased interest in beef producers looking for opportunities. to sell directly from farm to consumer. Producers lacked the information to put this into practice. Questions started coming into the Rogers County office about this and it was soon realized that programs could be offered to producers to meet this need. Through a partnership with area specialists Scott Clawson and Earl Ward, the Freezer Beef Production program was created.

The three-night program focused on livestock selection and nutrition, slaughter processes to maximize yield, and marketing. The program reached 30 to 35 producers each evening and evaluation results indicated that the information was extremely beneficial to participants, particularly in relation to feeding for quality beef, knowing your cost , beef price, nutritional information and effective storytelling.

Kudos to Donna Patterson, Earl Ward and Scott Clawson for an effective program that met a need in a timely manner.
