In this multi-billion dollar business, websites hire course creators to create a system of user-generated learning resources. But which is the best?

Coursera and Udemy are two of the biggest course sites. Here’s a quick comparison to find out which of these very different sites is right for you.

It boils down to this, doesn’t it? This round goes to Coursera. Although Udemy has great course creators, Coursera offers certification programs that can actively help you find a job or start a career.

Udemy has more courses, but Coursera focuses on quality over quantity. However, that means they fail in a few other categories that we need to discuss.

This definitely comes down to Udemy. The site almost constantly offers sales on courses, placing many of them at $19.99 or less. In recent years, however, the company has insisted that its creators charge more for their courses, thereby increasing the median course price.

Even so, Coursera is much more expensive on average. Its certification program costs $39 per month and often requires at least six months of participation. Plus, the site’s accredited online college programs can cost tens of thousands of dollars (depending on your location).

That’s still better than the average price of tuition to take college classes in person, but it doesn’t make it easy to pay $32,000+ for an online degree. Udemy is much more accessible, although it does not offer accreditation.

Which platform offers the most courses?

Because the barrier to entry is so much lower, Udemy offers the largest pool of courses. Coursera focuses on quality and placement (we’ll talk about that in a bit), which takes away from the quantity they’re able to offer.

However, having the most classes does not mean you are the best. With Udemy, you need to be more critical when analyzing reviews and determining if a course is right for you. Coursera guarantees quality in a way that Udemy cannot.

Which platform caters to different languages?

This is where Udemy gets some much-needed points. The site offers courses in more than 60 languages. This is mainly because it has a variety of course creators who speak a multitude of languages. Coursera has to certify and sometimes build its own courses, so it cannot always guarantee multilingual approaches.

Which platform provides a better customer service experience?

Ultimately, you are a customer buying a product. You need quality support if something goes wrong. After a thorough inspection, we were satisfied with the customer support teams of both platforms.

This was surprising after reading online reviews from social media platforms and forum sites, which cited inconsistencies with the support of both sites. It just goes to show that you shouldn’t trust every piece of user-generated content.

Despite some backlash over the past few years, we can safely say that Coursera and Udemy look after their customers in an equally pleasant and helpful manner.

Which platform is best for training employees?

It’s a good idea to advance the training of your employees if they are under contract with your company. Investing in their education is investing in your business. Fortunately, Udemy and Coursera offer enterprise options.

You can track your employees’ progress and stats, so you know how hands-on the training is, as well as supporting their business side of customer service. We have to give Coursera that spin because it’s much easier to manage customer support on a small stock of organized courses than it is for individual courses on a site like Udemy.

What about user experience?

The interface and user experience on Udemy can be a bit clunky. It’s been updated recently but doesn’t quite hit home. Since course creators can decide what additional learning materials they include, courses can be confusing if they overwhelm the student.

Coursera has a much more linear user interface and better progress tracking. If you want to understand how you are doing in your courses, Coursera has clear explanations.

Another minor complaint about Udemy is that the company emails you more frequently than Coursera. The information is not always relevant, which affects the user experience.

Coursera wins here, although it’s a pretty close race. Udemy could improve the user experience a little more to go neck and neck with Coursera.

The final verdict

Because Udemy wants creators to reduce the prices of their courses, some users are reporting poor quality courses and asking for a refund. Coursera is built differently. It has a higher standard even for its ground floor.

In short, Udemy is great for learning basic skills, and Coursera is where you go to master those skills. Start on Udemy to figure out what skills you want to learn without spending a lot of money, then move on to Coursera once you’ve figured out what you want.
