Wytheville Community College Scholarship to Honor the Memory of a Former Faculty Member

WYTHEVILLE, Va. (WFXR) – On Wednesday, January 26, the Education Foundation at Wytheville Community College (WCC) announced the “Bobby Jean Wymer Memorial Scholarship,” a scholarship in memory of Wymer who died in 2019 established by his friends and colleagues Phyllis Ashworth, Denita Burnett, Rhonda Catron-Wood and Janice Pryor.

Bobby Jean Wymer was Professor of English at the WCC for more than 30 years, from 1968 until his retirement in 2002. During his tenure at the WCC, Wymer taught academic composition, research, technical writing and writing courses. American literature.

In addition to teaching, Wymer has been actively involved in sponsoring student activities such as the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the WCC Forensics Team, and the WCC Student Yearbook. Wymer has also served on numerous university committees.

“Ms. Wymer was an amazing forensic science teacher and trainer,” said Burnett, alumnus and current Executive Assistant to the WCC President. “She had high expectations and high standards, but if you wanted to learn and work hard, she will go out of her way to help you succeed. Ms. Wymer truly cared about her students and inspired us to achieve our dreams.

Catron-Wood added that she often hears stories from WCC alumni about Wymer’s classes and the impact she had on their lives.

“Bobby loved students and went out of her way to help them succeed. She often paid out of her own pocket to help students in need, whether it was paying for food or basic necessities, buying a textbook, or covering the cost of their honor society membership. She was one of the most caring teachers you could ever know,” Catron-Wood said.

Wymer grew up in Smyth County and graduated from Sugar Grove High School. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Radford College and also attended Indiana University in Pennsylvania. She also taught English at the secondary level and at Marion College before teaching at the WCC.

The Bobby Jean Wymer Memorial Scholarship will provide financial assistance to WCC students, with priority given to Smyth County students enrolled in the education program.

Although Catron-Wood, Ashworth, Burnett and Pryor created the scholarship, additional funding is needed to ensure the scholarship is endowed to provide scholarships for future generations of WCC students. Once endowed, the interest generated from investing the funds will be used to provide annual scholarships.

“Bobby’s incredible legacy at Wytheville Community College is too important to forget,” Ashworth said. “Bobby was a valued friend, and this scholarship in her name will continue her legacy and help students for generations to come.”
